Improving Raman velocimetry of laser-cooled cesium atoms by spin-polarization

چکیده
We study the peformances of Raman velocimetry applied to laser-cooled, spinpolarized, cesium atoms. Atoms are optically pumped into the F = 4, m4 = 0 ground-state Zeeman sublevel, which is insensitive to magnetic perturbations. High resolution Raman stimulated spectroscopy is shown to produce Fourier-limited lines, allowing, in realistic experimental conditions, atomic velocity selection to one-fiftieth of a recoil velocity.

Tensor polarizability and dispersive quantum measurement of multilevel atoms
Optimally extracting information from measurements performed on a physical system requires an accurate model of the measurement interaction. Continuously probing the collective spin of an alkali-metal atom cloud via its interaction with an off-resonant optical probe is an important example of such a measurement where realistic modeling at the quantum level is possible using standard techniques ...
متن کاملBeyond optical molasses: 3D raman sideband cooling of atomic cesium to high phase-space density
We demonstrate a simple, general purpose method to cool neutral atoms. A sample containing 3x10(8) cesium atoms prepared in a magneto-optical trap is cooled and simultaneously spin polarized in 10 ms at a density of 1.1x10(11) cm (-3) to a phase space density nlambda(3)(dB) = 1/500, which is almost 3 orders of magnitude higher than attainable in free space with optical molasses. The technique i...
متن کاملPopulation change in the fine structure levels of cesium atoms using chirped laser
Here, the population transfer between two specific levels of Cesium atomunder the influence of chirped laser source has been numerically investigated. The maingoal of this study is the engineering of the population transfer between the 62S1/2 and 62P1/2levels of Cesium which is corresponding to its D1 transition line using a chirped lasersource. Constructing the system Hamiltonian, as well as t...
متن کاملAn optically pumped, highly polarized cesium beam for the study of spin-dependent electron scattering
We have set up an atomic beam of cesium for the study of spin-dependent electron-cesium scattering. The beam is produced by an effusive oven with continuous recirculation of the condensed metal. The beam is optically pumped by circularly polarized light from two laser diodes tuned to the 6 2 S1/2 (F -3) 6 21P3/2 (F' = 4) and 6 2 Sl/2 (F = 4) --, 6 2 P3/2 (F' = 5) transitions, respectively. Near...
متن کاملObservation of the cesium clock transition using laser-cooled atoms in a vapor cell.
Cesium atoms in a vapor cell have been trapped and cooled by using light from laser diodes. The 6S F = 4, m = 0 6S F = 3, m = 0 hyperfine clock transition was excited as these atoms then fell 2.5 cm in darkness. We observed a linewidth of 8 Hz with good signal-to-noise ratio. This gave a short-term fractional frequency resolution of 6.5 X 101-2/s/ei, and there is potential for substantial impro...
